Teachers | Ying He: I Am Willing to Be a Navigator for My Students

The head teacher of Class 1402 of Agronomy——Ying He, who leads her students on the road to growth, reflects what Dante said in The Divine Comedy, "In the emptiness and loneliness, I hold up the oil lamp. The night watcher will surely fill with the oil lamp and lit the light."

Section 1  Making cooperative efforts to build the class

When Ying He was just served as the head teacher of Class 1402 of Agronomy, many students had some doubts about their major—Agronomy. On this problem, Ying He said, “Only when you really touch this subject can you recognize the true face of Agronomy clearly.” Therefore, from the beginning of students’ enrollment, she carried out a professional introduction about agronomy for her students, helping them to have a correct understanding of major selection.

As for the election of the class committee, Ying He upholds the principle of “Being willing to provide voluntary service for the class”. So she provides a platform for those who are willing to serve for the class and then leads classmates to build a harmonious class.

What’s more, Ying He said, “I will respect the personality of my students and give them enough room for development.”

Section 2  Communicating with students deeply, as a teacher and a friend

In private, the relationship between students and Ying He is always very harmonious and they has maintained a good teacher-student relationship. “Teacher Ying He is very kind and approachable,” one of her students, Qiaoling Zhang recalled, “When we encounter with difficulties, she always spares no effort to solve them.”

Every month on her students’ first year at university, Ying He would give her birthday cakes and wishes togetehr with other students; Every Mid-Autumn Festival, she and her students would gather in the student dormitory and enjoy mooncakes altogether.

When it comes to the funding for impoverished students, because of the large number of impoverished students in the class and the insufficient amount of places for funding, she communicated with her students to know about the true situation of students’ family. Then she actively contacted with college counselor to help impoverished students arrange work-study jobs and solve the poverty effectively.

Section 3  Being willing to be Bo Le, helping her students seriously

On students’ sophomore year, students began to make plan for the future, but some students were indecisive about which one to choose, work or further study. For this, Ying He not only provided her own opinions, but also reminded her students, “You should ask your parents and relatives for their thoughts about your life plan, because they know you best.”

Nearing graduation, Ying He deeply communicated with students who had postgraduate recommendation one by one, cooperating senior professors to write recommendation letters for them. At presentthere’re six students who have obtained qualifications for research.

During the job-searching period of the recruitment for graduates, Ying He told her students, “In the preparation process, rather than stand alone, you should cooperate to obtain employment information and exert your own professional competence.” Now five students have obtained offers.

Teacher Ying He is the light in the darkness. She guides the brightness and she is the “lamplighter”. She is also the sail in the storm. Being the “navigator” she rides the wind and waves.
